Greetings!
I am so excited to be a part of all the wonderful things Superhero Events is doing, I am more privileged to be on staff with some very committed people who are dedicated to doing everything with excellence and integrity.
Like a dam that is on the brink of busting wide-open, I am so thrilled about the Hollywood Half Marathon that I can hardly contain myself with all the exhilaration and anticipation that is growing on the inside of me.   Now only 11 days away from the HHM, I eagerly await the arrival of the 10,000 runners that will fill the streets of Hollywood with a never before seen wave of euphoria illuminating from the runners as they take it to the streets!  We are almost there.  Almost there!
Yesterday, I conducted another interview with a young woman that in my opinion is a fighter for life and a hero to those she loves.  I was deeply moved by her story and after weeks of us missing each other we finally sat down and conversed over the phone what turned out to be the best interview I have conducted.
Meet the amazing Debra Rivera

Several months ago, Superhero Events President Ken Nwadike Jr. announced that interviews would be given for those individuals who were selected from their responses to their greatest accomplishments and goals.  Debra’s response gripped my heart right away and I knew that I had to interview her and publicize her story.  So what was this response that moved me so? Debra said, “I got pregnant at ages 14 and 16 and graduated from the University of Arizona. I'm the first to graduate college on my mom's side of the family! Now I'm a teacher hoping to help others realize their dreams.” Yeah, who wouldn’t be moved by this statement right?
28 year old Debra is a wife and mother of two.  She is an 8th grade Special Education teacher in Albuquerque, NM and I know firsthand that working in that field is extremely hard because I was an instructional assistant for junior high and high school students in the mental-health field as well.  The students are inflicted with severe emotional behavior disorders, post-traumatic stress disorders, ADHD, and other disabilities as well.  It is not easy.
Debra seems to have a solid hold on life at her present state; sadly, this stability was not always there for her to depend on.  When Debra was 15 years old she discovered that she was pregnant and made the decision to move out on her own.  She met a lot of challenges and was homeless for a while.  She met and entered a relationship with a man that turned out to be what she least expected.  He was abusive both physically and emotionally toward Debra.  Sometime later, she became pregnant by this man with her second child.  Debra’s biggest challenge was staying with this abusive man until she could put herself through college and muster up the courage to leave that man.
One day that courage did come.  “My ex was really controlling.  I had to move to go to college.  I got up one day and I said I’m going to college and you can come with me or stay.  I took my two kids and put them in the car and drove to Arizona.”  Once in Arizona, Debra relied on the help of many people to help her find a place to live, work and go to school.  She was fortunate enough to find a job on her college campus which just so happened to be the same time her two young children was in daycare.  Every night Debra stated that she would only sleep for 2 hours because she had homework that she had to complete and children to tend to.   Debra was awarded grants which also helped to put her through school.
It wasn’t long before Debra’s controlling ex came knocking at the door and joined her once again in Arizona.  Debra was working yet she was not seeing any of her hard earned money.  Her ex was keeping it all and leaving Debra to take care of her children herself.  When Debra had enough, she walked out and never looked back.
Now, this remarkable young woman has the paper to show her hard work and determination had paid off.  In 2006 Debra graduated from the University of Arizona with a double major in management information and accounting.  She also minored in Spanish.  Debra went on to obtain her master’s degree in Special Education from the University of Phoenix.  I repeatedly told Debra that even though I did not know her, I was so proud of her and all her accomplishments.  Unlike many others in life, Debra decided not to become a victim of her circumstances, instead she let them mold her into someone so much greater.  She truly has fought for all she has come to know.
Debra before and after she lost 65lbs
For those of you who may be hoping to shed a few pounds but are not sure running will do it for you, let your worries wash away now! Debra Rivera has lost 65lbs from running and changing her diet habits.  Debra shared with me that running, counting calories and cutting out red meat are big contributors to her losing all that weight.  “I am 90% vegetarian” Debra said as we discussed the changes in her diet and exercise.  That’s one thing Debra and I will never share in common because I refuse to give up my meat.  I love to eat meat J
Debra likes to run down the bike trails in her hometown and often finds that she does not have running partners.  “Sometimes I run with my husband.” She went on to say,   “mostly I run alone because I run so early in the morning, it’s the only time I can fit it in my schedule.”  This wife, mother and hard working woman isn’t letting excuses stop her from doing what she loves best.  3 days a week she is hitting the pavement   because “running helps me release and deal with all the stuff from my past.”  Everyone has their own coping skill.  What’s yours?  Are you utilizing it?
Debra ran her first half marathon in October 2011 during the Long Beach Half Marathon.  Her finish time was 2:12 and she hopes to run across the finish line at the Hollywood Half Marathon with a finish time between 2:08 and 2:10.  You can do it! Her challenge was the high altitude.  She went to Long Beach and struggled with her breathing.  Debra recalled her experience, “I had to learn to adjust to my breathing.  It was a tough race for me but I finished and I was so happy.”
When Debra was training for the Long Beach Half Marathon she joined a club called Albuquerque Fit.  With that running club she ran once a week and continued the running habit while running 3 days a week on her own.  For the Hollywood Half Marathon, Debra is training with the Nike Plus training program.
So what advice does Debra have for those of you who may be considering running a half marathon for the first time?  “From my first half marathon a lot of people talked about getting a PR and finishing on time.  I wanted to finish and celebrate the hard work it took to finish.  I wanted to have the stress gone.  Think of running your half marathon more as a celebration instead of feeling scared or pressured about it. “  Sounds like a value tip to me.
Debra, like most people, wants to help others realize their potential and help shift them into position to run the race of their lives while living their dreams and goals.  "When I first graduated college I worked at Deloitte.  I was a software tester for defects.  I ended up realizing how did I ever get to this place? One of my high school teachers helped take care of me, she believed in me when nobody else did.  I thought I should show my gratitude in go back to school and become a teacher.  I teach Special Education.”
And that is exactly what she did.  After reading everything that Debra has been through and accomplished, don’t you have a sense of pride and appreciation for her?  She refused to let her circumstances dictate to her what she would be or who she would become.  Debra you are undoubtedly a hero to your own children and those you serve day by day in your classroom.  I have no doubt that you are changing more lives than you realize.

For those of you who have been following the Hollywood Half Marathon, you know that favor surrounds Superhero Events like the Pacific Ocean that surrounds the beautiful Tahitian Islands.  Take a minute and picture that in your mind.  Isn’t it beautiful? Superhero Events has definitely caught the eyes of attention from many well known companies and some of Americas most elite businesspeople.  You do not want to miss out!
On Friday March 16, 2012 Superhero Events was invited to Van Nuys for the Hollywood Half Marathon 2012 Official Pace Car Unveiling (courtesy of Galpin Auto Sports).  What an experience it was to be a part of the celebration.  Mad Mike, from Pimp My Ride was there alongside Ken Nwadike (President of Superhero Events) as we all excitedly waited the unveiling of the official pace car for the Hollywood Half Marathon.   The car that will lead out the 6,000 runners of the Hollywood Half Marathon is a Mustang BOSS 302x. There was nothing like it!

Galpin Auto Sports welcomed Superhero Events and some of the runners of the Hollywood Half Marathon to their showroom for the celebration.  Every guest was blessed indeed as we stood surrounded by welcoming Galpin staff.  We were treated with such excellence that made each of us feel important and welcomed.  They even catered food for us and it was amazing! There was pasta, shrimp, salad, and lots of fruit, sliders that were off the chain, amazing desserts, and plenty of beverages. G.A.S. has a museum with some jaw dropping cars that make you wish you had a few hundred grand laying around to purchase one.  It was a special time for all of us.
The Hollywood Half Marathon will be held on Saturday April 7, 2012 in Hollywood, Cali.  Believe me when I say that you do not want to miss this opportunity to run with the stars.  If you miss this year’s event, do not fret because there will be a Hollywood Half Marathon every year!  For more information please visit http://www.hollywoodhalfmarathon.com/.

Greetings!
Can you believe that we are exactly 3 weeks away from the Hollywood Half Marathon?  In just 21 days the streets of Hollywood will be packed with runners, volunteers and curious spectators who will come together to celebrate the Inaugural Hollywood Half Marathon.  We are now longer months away, but now just a few weeks.  Can you feel the excitement growing within you?
Earlier this week I interviewed a woman who is well known in the acting world.  I was immediately at ease as I interviewed this particular young lady.  She has an easygoing and laidback personality that no doubt fits her perfectly for her profession.
Everybody, meet…
Tanna Frederick

Tanna Frederick is a 32 year old actress from Iowa who is currently residing in Southern California.  You may recognize her as Maggie Chase from the film Queen of the Lot in which she won best actress at WorldFest-Houston in 2011.  Tanna’s greatest accomplishment is that she has become a “stage and independent film actress who rose to prominence for her title role in Henry Jaglom's film Hollywood Dreams for which she received the Best Actress Award at the 2008 Fargo Film Festival.”  But it won't stop there.  This beautiful and energetic young actress has a promising future ahead of her.  For those of you that will be hitting the pavement with us next month, you may get lucky and spot Tanna on the track with you.
Aside from being an actress, Tanna has a lot of commitments she is part of.  Tanna has her own nonprofit organization called Project Save Our Surf.  The organization is committed to keeping our oceans clean.  “Surfing is my other passion” Tanna said as she shared the heart of her organization with me. Tanna holds a 24 hour surf-a-thon every year in Huntington Beach, CA.  Pro surfers, celebrities, kids, and members of the community come together to raise funds to keep the oceans clean.  I was amazed that Tanna who is more than an actress and a leader of her organization is also a surfer!  Busy woman eh? Can surfing help runners? Tanna said “Surfing helps as far as cross training.  Surfing helps to stretch my torso and legs.”  So for those of you, who are looking for a new hobby besides running, try surfing!
Tanna is a woman who values education.  She graduated as valedictorian from the University of Iowa class of 1999. Tanna spoke proudly of her accomplishments, “graduating with honors in political science and theatre was a great goal.  They are two different fields but so similar in many ways.  I learned just as much from both.  I learned a lot about behaviorism in politics and acting.”  Tanna is a talented and educated actress who enjoys running and surfing and making sure she is doing her part to make the world a better place through her organization.
The young actress started acting when she was 8 years old and has appeared in several films. Next, I asked Tanna what she gained from being awarded the Best Actress Award at the 2008 Fargo Film Festival.  “I gained a real sense of support.  I gained a real sense of encouragement.  I think people who don’t live on the coast think it’s an overnight thing in acting.  Either you make it or you don’t.  It took me a long time to get there.  It was like a breakthrough time for me.  Once I got that award I started getting a number of awards in film festivals.  There is so much competition out there.  What people think of me is important to me.  Whether they’re inspired by me or not is important to me as well.  I was so happy.  It was like winning an Oscar for me.  It was a sign from my grandparents from heaven saying you’re on the right track don’t give up.”    Pretty inspirational huh?
So where did Tanna get her running feet from? Tanna comes from a family or marathon runners.  As a child, Tanna was exposed to the track and developed a passion for running while watching her parents compete in their own marathons.  With an ease in her voice, Tanna said, “I started from A to Z and only running marathons.  My parents have run 5 marathons and they will be out for the Hollywood Half.  I’m so excited to run in the Hollywood Half Marathon.”
To my surprise, I learned that Tanna Frederick has never run in a half marathon.  She has only competed in marathon races.  In fact, the Hollywood Half Marathon will be Tanna’s first half marathon in which she will compete.  Her estimated time to complete the half marathon is 1:45.  She will be competing in the LA Marathon during St. Patrick’s Day weekend and shooting for a 3:40 finish time.  This will be Tanna’s 3rd marathon and she is hoping to qualify for the Boston Marathon.  We wish you the best Tanna.  Go get’ em girl!
Marathons are not the only places where you will find Tanna getting her run-on.  Tanna enjoys running along the ocean to catch the energy the ocean offers.   “There is a path that goes from Venice Beach to Malibu.  That’s my go-to place.  I never get tired of running that.  I have seen some of the same runners for the past several years.  I can drink in the outdoors, relax and not think about anything.  It’s calming to me.  It’s kinda like my form of yoga being in that familiar territory away from all the distractions of my cell phone, computer and auditions.”
Tanna’s running buddy is Ron Vignone who is also Tanna’s creative partner, “He ran the last marathon with me so he and I are running this next marathon together.  It’s important and smart to have running partners.  It’s such a journey.  It’s almost like going to Disneyland.  You can’t describe it to anyone else unless they’re doing it with you or they’ve trained with you.  We have a lot of fun doing it.  I wouldn’t want to train by myself.”
I asked Tanna what her experience was like running her first marathon.  Her response was “My first marathon was the Chicago Marathon.  I moved to LA after graduating from the University of Iowa.  I flew out to Chicago to train with my friend Crystal.  I had never been to Chicago.  I was happy with my 4:08 time.  It was a blast and got me addicted.  It was a great excuse to bond with a girlfriend. It was neat and worked out well.” There you have it ladies…gather up your best girls and hit the track and field.
So how does the young actress train for her races? Tanna trains with the Hal Higdon Marathon Training program.  She has been using the training program for quite some time and finds it to be “very resourceful.”  The training is very specific and clearly spelled out.  Referring to Hal, Tanna said, “He is my hero.  I base my schedule off of his.  He’s awesome.  He’s my dude.”
Just like our last blog on Superhero Events Vice President Sabrina Nwadike, both of these runners agree that loading up on carbs before the race is essential.  Tanna expressed how much she craved bread while training for a marathon.  Usually she is a meat eater but during marathons, all Tanna wants is “bread bread bread!”  Rest assured because those of you who are like me and love your carbs, you now have an excuse to load up on all the carbs you want in preparation for your next running event.
Potential marathon runners, what advice does Tanna have for you?  Tanna laughed as she shared with me what her mother always taught her.  Tanna’s mother continuously told her that while running she needed to “smile the whole way through.  My mom told me she didn’t care what I did as long as I smiled through the whole race.” Tanna went on to say, “your receptors in your body will think you’re having a really good time.  It will change your entire attitude.  Smile through your training.  Smile through everything even if your body doesn’t feel right.  It will make a world of difference.”  I do not want to see anything but smiling faces on those running through the streets of Hollywood.   J
My final question is always the most important question I ask all our runners because we all have a story of that special someone or somebodies that helped us get to where we are today.  So who does this successful young actress credit all her success to?  When I asked Tanna that question there was a sense of surety and adoration for someone much loved in her voice.  Answer? First and foremost, her parents!  “I credit my success to my parents because they are forces of nature.  They both grew up in large families with hardly any income.  They are hard hard hard workers.  They were the only two out of their siblings to go to college and get masters degrees.  They have an undying belief in me and without them I would never have been able to keep going in the film industry.  And Henry Jaglom gave me a chance with my first film, Hollywood Dreams.  Him giving me the opportunity and seeing something in me and allowing me to shine, I could never have done that without him.  He truly is my David Selznick.”
And there you have it folks! What a talented and down to earth young lady Tanna Frederick is.  I really enjoyed interviewing Tanna.  She is a remarkable young woman that will no doubt get a heavy draft under her wings and she will take off in the film industry with a bright and promising future.
Thank you for reading our blog friends.
See you at City Walk!

Greetings!
Friends, we are only 25 days away from the Hollywood Half Marathon and the excitement continues to increase as we are all gearing up for that day.  Hollywood Half participants are without doubt training daily for the BIG day.  Get ready runners for the run of your life because there has never been any race as electrifying like the Hollywood Half Marathon!
Last night I interviewed someone I know very well.  In fact, I have known her for the past 27 years of her life and she is truly a remarkable and inspiring young woman.  Meet my baby sister…
Sabrina Lynn Nwadike

Sabrina is the Vice President of Superhero Events and although she will not be running in the Hollywood Half Marathon on April 7, I think it absolutely fitting to introduce this wonderful woman to you.
Sabrina, who is married to Superhero Events CEO and Founder Ken Nwadike Jr., started the company together in 2010.  I asked Sabrina what role she plays at Superhero Events and she said, “I have a lot of responsibilities at Superhero Events.  I deal a lot with participant interaction.  I handle a lot of logistics for the race even down to designing the medal for the Hollywood Half Marathon and the Varsity Jacket for the Hollywood Half as well.”  Wearing many roles within the company does not stop Sabrina from flourishing as a successful wife and mother.  Sabrina and Ken have two children with one on the way next month.  6 year old Nichole, who is also an active runner, is leaving her own mark in the running world as well.  She is a part of the San Diego Cheetahs running team.  18 month Kenny Jr. keeps his parents always on the go as he runs around everywhere, and he’s a quick little munchkin too.  With good balance, Sabrina’s hands are far from idle.  Eagerly she works to fulfill the Superhero Events motto, “Saving the World One Run at a Time.”
Sabrina, Ken, Nichole and Kenny Jr.

Sabrina commented on what it is like to be married to the Director of Superhero Events.  Sabrina said, “My life in non-stop but it’s fun and exciting and I love the adventure.  I wouldn’t want it any other way.”  There are several races that Sabrina and Ken direct each year.  Those races are: Hollywood Half MarathonVeterans Day 5K, Green 10K Series, the Superhero Mile, and still more that are to come. But wait, that’s not it! Not only do Sabrina and her husband Ken own Superhero Events, they also own San Diego Race Timing.  So if you or anyone you know needs a race timed, San Diego Race Timing is the place to go!
Superhero Events has had a lot of media exposure and in 2011, Superhero Events was nominated for Philanthropic Small Business of the Year by the Classy Awards. Superhero Events is definitley on the rise to becomming a leader in the running and race world.

Sabrina & Ken at the Classy Awards 2011
Growing up with a very active sister like Sabrina was not always easy.  I was not the active type.  Rather, I would spend my childhood days playing Barbie’s in my bedroom and make-believing in our backyard that my toy dogs and Lion King Figurines were real.  Our eldest sister Crystal had her own way of being active too.  She was part of the Flag team at her school and put on several performances throughout the school year.  Sabrina on the other hand would always be running around with the neighborhood kids always getting into something.  In our elementary school, we would have jog-a-thons and I remember every year Sabrina would surpass the goal and win all her ribbons while I sluggishly took my time.  It seems that running has always been in my sister’s blood and now she is Vice President of one of Americas most elite and sought after running companies.  I couldn’t be prouder.
Something you may find surprising is that Sabrina did not run a half marathon until the 2011 Long Beach Half Marathon and she was 3 months pregnant too.  What?! Are you serious?! Yes, I am.  Since then, Sabrina has run 3 more half marathons and all of them while pregnant.  Her determination and savvy sassy attitude caught the attention of Savvy Sassy Moms and an interview with Sabrina was published.
The first half marathon that Sabrina ran in was not at all easy for her.  In fact it was quite difficult.  We laughed as she told me what her experience was in running her first half marathon.  She did what many people probably do to prepare, and that is absolutely NOTHING! Sabrina said, “I didn’t train for my 1st half marathon.  I thought it was going to be a piece of cake.  By the time I got to mile 10 I hit the wall and everything in my body hurt.  I didn’t think I was going to make it.  Kenny came back for me and encouraged me along the way.  He pushed me to finish and at the last half mile my runners high kicked in and I passed a bunch of people on the way.”
I then asked Sabrina how she trains and the response I got was not shocking at all.  In fact, I encouraged Sabrina to be honest because people want to see and hear the reality of situations people are in.  Not every runner has time to run 8 miles a day and eat fruits and veggies all day and bench 350lbs as they train.  No way!  “I don’t train” Sabrina said.  “I just go out and run.  I know that’s bad and I encourage people to train.  I do my normal weekly runs but I don’t train for half marathons.  I wouldn’t recommend not training.”  If you are considering running a half marathon, or any race for that matter, please train your body!
Sabrina’s favorite place to run is at the Bonita Golf Course in Bonita, CA.  She likes the run because not only is it scenic, but it is also a full dirt path without any cement.  “I’m 9 months pregnant right now so I’ve stopped running.  Before I stopped running I would run 4 days a week and 3miles a day.” And for those of you, who claim you need running buddies to hit the track with you, do what Sabrina does and take your children with you.    “Sometimes I take my kids with me when I go running.  My children are my running buddies.  Sometimes I push my son Kenny in his baby jogger and he loves it.” There! It has been said.  No one is without excuse!
Everyone wants to know what a good runner eats for breakfast right?  Well, Sabrina said her daily breakfast consist of Honey Bunches of Oats and water or juice.  Yummy!  Sounds good right?  Healthy choices for healthy runners.   For those of you who have never run in a half marathon before, take Sabrina’s advice: “Training is key.  Make sure you train before your first half marathon.  Get involved in training groups.  You should have running buddies as well.  The night before the race it’s good to eat carbs because it gives you energy for the race day.  Eat a good breakfast the morning of the race and make sure you take it easy because it’s your first half marathon. “ Taking it easy does not mean half doing.  It means pushing your body to go farther than the limitations of your mind.
As we were wrapping up the interview, I asked Sabrina what legacy she wants to leave for her children.  And she responded by saying, “I want my children to remember me as a successful business woman who put God first and worked hard alongside her husband to help provide for them.  I don’t want my children to lack for anything.  My mother and father did the best that they could to provide for me and my sisters. I just want my children to be able to experience the things in life that I wasn’t able to experience growing up.  And I feel that by what my husband and I are doing we are opening the door for our children to have a successful future.”
What an amazing woman she is.  Being a writer for Superhero Events is quite the experience because I am fortunate and graced to be able to see a lot of the behind the scenes work that goes into running Superhero Events.  Let me be the first to tell you, it ain’t easy.  Sabrina and Ken have successfully arrived where they are today not by cheap gimmicks but by hard work and dedication to this call on their lives.  For those of you who are joining us in the Hollywood Half Marathon or in any of our races, rest assured that Sabrina, Ken and the Superhero Event staff will take good care of you.  You are in good hands.
Thank you for reading with us today and we will see you in 25 days at City Walk!

Greetings!
This past weekend I conducted my first interview with a very inspiring young man.  As I was reading through the responses many of you runners posted, I was blown away.  There were so many excellent posts of various accomplishments and hopeful goals that truly are remarkable.
So, without further ado
Meet Tyler Lucas…

Tyler Lucas is a 27 year old beach volleyball coach from Southern California.  Tyler has also played beach volleyball professionally.  Is anyone up for a volleyball match on the beaches of Southern Cali?  Count me in! You may also know Tyler Lucas as Team Lucas.  Tyler’s response to what his greatest accomplishment is was:  Pushing my brother with cerebral palsy in his wheelchair, in run/walks we enter. Aw, how sweet right? I mean, who wouldn’t be moved by such a response?  Their team motto is “Live Above Adversity.”  And that is exactly what they do.
As I interviewed Tyler Lucas over the phone this past weekend I could really feel his passion for running and his dedication and overflowing love for his younger brother Tysen.  Tysen has a severe medical condition of Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy and Scoliosis that has disabled him from participating in sports.
Tysen, whom Tyler pushes in his wheelchair in all their runs, enjoys the ride and bonding with his older brother.  He’s no longer on the sidelines as a spectator.  He has now become a participant!  As a result of this brother-team the name Team Lucas was formed.  When I asked Tyler what inspired him to start pushing Tysen in his wheelchair while he runs, Tyler said, “I have a great time.  We can bond together and he likes going fast in the races.  It drives me to do the running events because he loves it.  He has his hands in the air at the finish lines and people are clapping.  He wants to play sports but he can’t do it.  It’s something we can do together.  It drives me.  At the end of the races he walks across the finish line with assistance.”
Team Lucas has competed in 9 races together all throughout Southern California.  In just 32 days the brother-team will be on the running track again.  This time they will be competing at the Inaugural Hollywood Half Marathon running together through the streets of Hollywood, California.  Team Lucas estimated their finish time for the Hollywood Half to be 2 hours and 30 minutes.  Team Lucas has never ran a half marathon before.  The Hollywood Half will be their first marathon together, but not their last.  Team Lucas ran their first 5k together back in 2007 in Redondo Beach, CA.
Everyone wants to know what a great runner eats for breakfast right? Tyler’s daily breakfast changes every day. Tyler Usually has2 eggs with spinach and tomatoes.  He also has oatmeal and toast.  And he washed it all down with water and muscle milk. We laughed together as I expressed that my daily breakfast sounds nothing like that because I usually take whatever I can find and it’s not always the healthier choices like Tyler.  But hey, that’s why I am doing the interviews and not competing in marathons!
Tyler’s favorite place to go on a leisurely run twice a week is at Hermosa Pier and Manhattan Pier located in Southern California.  I asked Tyler if he had any running buddies that join him on these leisurely runs.  Tyler’s comment was, “Sometimes my friends go.  Running is boring for a lot of people so I usually go by myself.”
Training is high on Tyler’s priority list and from what he explained to me about his training habits, he is not playing around.  The dude is serious!  When training for races, Tyler goes to the gym every day.  That workout consists of the following: spending 1 hr and 30 minutes at the gym doing interval training.  He will use each machine for 5 minutes.  30 sec fast 10 sec slow. Tyler works out on the stair climber, rowing machine, elliptical machine, bike, and the treadmill.  That’s an intense workout if you ask me.
I asked Tyler what some of his challenges have been in pushing his brother throughout the various races they have done together.  Tyler said, “We haven’t faced any challenges so far.”  In the Manhattan race they were the first to ever compete in a wheelchair.  Tyler went on to say, “The hills were challenging and pretty big.  They go straight up and they go straight down.”  I remember telling Tyler how amazing I think he is for what he is doing with his brother.  I also expressed to him how inspiring he is as an individual and as a team with his brother and that more people should be doing what Team Lucas is doing.
What was the most memorable or inspiring moment Tyler has had while pushing his brother in various races? Tyler’s response: “The medal.  We beat a lot of people in the Manhattan race.  1hr 5min was my best time in the 2011 Manhattan race.  We are raising money for Angels Smiles.  Disabled people need special dentists.  We got turned away from all the dentists and Diana Zschaschel, DDS specializes in that.  A lot of people with disabilities can’t get dental care.  She worked on my brother’s teeth and he is better now.”  So not only is Team Lucas running for the benefits of brotherly bond and better physical condition, they are also running to raise money to help others.  Is that not inspirational?
My final question for Tyler was: What advice would you give to someone who has never competed in a competitive race before? Tyler said, “You can do anything if you put your mind to it.  You have to train a lot and get into good physical condition.  If you put your mind to it you can definitely do whatever you want.  You see something, go after it.  Put 100% of your heart into it and its going to turn out good.”
I am so excited to meet Team Lucas at the Hollywood Half Marathon next month.  Tyler is a very inspiring individual and I really enjoyed talking with him.  I know that as he continues to strive at working towards bettering other peoples’ lives, he will in turn be blessed in all he does.  Good work Team Lucas!
